When reading this New Republic piece on the decline of newspapers, the following quote from the legendary Walter Lippmann struck me:
For the newspaper is in all literalness the bible of democracy, the book out of which a people determines its conduct. It is the only serious book most people read. It is the only book they read every day.
Morality has survived the decline of the Bible; but can democracy survive the decline of the newspaper?
I honestly don’t know.
What I do know is that “Liberty and the News” has been added to my reading list.
